Dr. Veronica Nava is a freshwater ecologist whose research focuses on the impacts of plastic and microplastic pollution on carbon cycling and ecosystem metabolism in aquatic ecosystems. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she obtained her PhD in 2022. Her work combines long-term time series analyses with field and experimental studies in lakes and rivers across temperate and tropical regions, with a particular emphasis on plastic–microbial interactions (the “plastisphere”) and their consequences for ecosystem metabolism and primary productivity. Dr. Nava has been awarded an Italian Science Fund (FIS) Starting Grant (€1.58M over 5 years), a prestigious and highly competitive program modeled after the European Research Council (ERC), for the project PANIC: Plastics as Novel Interference in the Carbon Cycle. She has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Nevada–Reno (USA) within the Wonders of the Mekong project and collaborates with international research networks, including GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network) and SIL (International Society of Limnology). Among her numerous scientific publications in high-impact journals, she is first author of a recent Nature paper (2023) and has been an invited speaker at international conferences and institutions. Dr. Nava has received several awards, including the L’Oréal Italy–UNESCO For Women in Science Award (2024), and currently serves as Associate Editor for Inland Waters.
